The original spelling is աւդ (awd), from Proto-Indo-European *H(V)u-dʰ-. Cognates include Lithuanian ãutas (foot-cloth, rag), Latvian àuts (cloth, bandage), Russian об-увь (ob-uvʹ). Related to ագանիմ (aganim) and օթոց (ōtʻocʻ, blanket).
