From Middle High German agrāz, from Medieval Latin agresta (“unripe fruit, verjuice”), likely applied to the gooseberry due to its sour taste. Compare Austro-Bavarian Ogrosl (“gooseberry”).

Alternatively, borrowed from Polish agrest (“gooseberry”), from the same Latin source.
