Ultimately from Ancient Greek δίφθογγος (díphthongos, “two sounds”). Compare Belarusian дыфто́нг (dyftónh), German Diphthong, Lithuanian diftongas, Polish dyftong, Russian дифто́нг (diftóng), Ukrainian дифто́нг (dyftónh).
