נעגעלע
Yiddish edit
Etymology edit
From Middle High German negellīn, negelīn, diminutive of Middle High German nagel. By surface analysis, נאָגל (nogl) + ־עלע (-ele), with formation of umlaut. Compare Alemannic German Nägeli, Negeli, German Näglein (archaic). Compare also German Nelke, a back-formation from plural Nelken, from whence נעלקנ־ (nelkn-), as in נעלקנאייל (nelkneyl, “clove oil”).
