From Old High German eddeshwaz (whence German etwas), from edde- + hwaz, with the eventual /-tw-/ assimilating to /-p-/. Compare Luxembourgish eppes, Alemannic German öppis and Pennsylvania German, Rhine Franconian, and Swabian ebbes.
