From Sogdian [script needed] (ʾʾγʾz /⁠āγāz⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *ā- (ad-) + *gaHz- (to run, start), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ed- (at) + *g⁽ʷʰ⁾eh₂ģʰ- (to wade). Cognate with Sanskrit गाह् (gāh, to dive into, wade), Slovene gáziti (to wade).[1][2]
