Etymology edit

From the first two letters of the Arabic alphabet arranged in the modern style. This is the standard alphabetical order used for sorting words:

أ ب ت ث ج ح خ د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ع غ ف ق ك ل م ن ه و ي

Attested since at least 1435, in Ahmad ibn Arabshah's work Aja'ib al-Maqdur fi Nawa'ib al-Taymur[1]
