Etymology edit

From Classical Syriac ܐܘܪܫܠܡ (ʾūrišlēm, ʾōrēšlim), a pre-Hebrew form. Compare 𒌑𒊒𒊓𒅆𒆠 (Urušalim) in the Armana letters (14th century B.C.).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ʔuː.ru.ʃa.liːm/

Proper noun edit

أُورُشَلِيم (ʔūrušalīmf

  1. (Christianity, Israel) Jerusalem (the claimed (and de-facto) capital city of Israel; the claimed capital city of Palestine)

Usage notes edit

Because of its common origin with Hebrew ירושלים, the Arabic أُورُشَلِيم (ʔūrušalīm) is used in official Arabic documents of the Israeli government. It is also used in Christian liturgical Arabic. Outside of these two contexts, the name is seldom used and الْقُدْس (al-quds) is preferred.
