Etymology edit
Inherited from Middle Persian ’lz’ (Arzah), from Avestan 𐬀𐬭𐬉𐬰𐬀𐬵𐬍 (Arəzahī, “east”).
The term initially was identified with the Indus region, with the expansion of knowledge during the Middle Iranian era, it came to be applied to most of South Asia.
