Elazığ province

Etymology

edit

The city was once a suburb of the ancient town of خرپوت (harput), largely destroyed during World War I, and gains its name after the creation of Mamuret-ul-Aziz vilayet from a part of the Diyarbekir vilayet, in honor of the sultan Abdulaziz. Subsequently, the name معمورةالعزیز (mamûretülʼazîz) came into use as an alternative name for خرپوت (harput) and it quickly evolved into the clipped form elʼazîz.
