From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (bwltn' /⁠burtan⁠/, carry, take), from Proto-Iranian *bárati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰárati, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéreti.[1] Cognate to Pashto وړل (wṛəl), English bear, and Russian брать (bratʹ).
