Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (tpʾh /⁠tabāh⁠/, “injury”), from Proto-Iranian *tap-, perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tep- (“to be warm, to be hot”). Compare Sanskrit ताप (tāpa, “heat; torment”).
