Etymology edit

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tevsi (dish, plate), a word that is already attested in Turkic from the 8th century, itself from Middle Chinese 疊子 (dep̚ t͡sɨX, small dish; plate). Cognate with Azerbaijani təpsi and Karakhanid تَڤْسٖی (tewsi).
