Etymology edit
Borrowed from Classical Syriac *ܚܪܘܕܐ (ḥārūḏā, literally “gnawer”). Compare Hebrew חֹלֶד (ḥṓleḏ, “weasel”), Classical Syriac ܚܘܠܕܐ (ḥuldā, “mole”), ܚܠܘܕܐ (ḥallūḏā, ḥālūḏā), ܚܠܕܘܕܐ (ḥalḏūḏā, ḥalləḏūḏā, “field mouse or jerboa”), Old Armenian խլուրդ (xlurd, “mole”).

- a. 1248, ابن البيطار [Ibn al-Bayṭār], الجامع لمفردات الأدوية والأغذية [De simplicibus medicinis opus magnum], s. v. حارود:
- حارود: هو اسم الحيوان الذي خصاه الجندبادستر وقد ذكرته في الجيم.
- ḥārūd: This is the name of the animal of which the testicles give جُنْدُبَادَسْتَر (jundubādastar, “castoreum”), mentioned under the letter j.
