Bears a pattern indicative of Aramaic borrowing, apparently from a derivation of the cognate to Arabic حَفَرَ (ḥafara, “to dig”) not attested as a plant name in Aramaic.

- خافور: زعم قوم أنه المر والعريض (var. المرو العريض) الورق (var. −الورق) الذي يتخذ عندنا بالأندلس في الحور (var. الدور)، وسنذكره بأنواعه في حرف الميم، والخافور أيضاً عند أهل مصر هو الخرطال الذي يكون في الشعير وسنذكره فيما بعد. قال أبو حنيفة: هو نبات له حب تجمعه النمل في بيوتها.
