From Old Armenian Կարին (Karin), a city which, spelled in Arabic قَالِيقَلَا (qālīqalā), was famed for rugs. Compare Arabic زَرْبِيَّة (zarbiyya, rug) supposedly being from the name of Azerbaijan.
