From Middle Persian hwptk (xuftag), from Proto-Iranian *huptáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *suptás (“asleep”), from Proto-Indo-European *sup-tó-s, from *swep- (“to sleep”). Cognate with Pashto ويده (widë, “asleep”), Vedic सुप्त (suptá).
