Etymology

edit

From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (dlht'), [Book Pahlavi needed] (dlʾht'), 𐫅𐫡𐫟𐫤 (drxt /draxt/, tree), from Proto-Iranian *draxta- (firmly standing), with the first part deriving from Proto-Iranian *drag- (to hold, strengthen), itself related to Proto-Iranian *dā́ru (wood, tree) and/or Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰar- (to hold, support). Cognate with Parthian 𐫅𐫡𐫟𐫤 (drxt /draxt/), Baluchi درچک (diračk, tree). Compare also the Iranian borrowings Imperial Aramaic 𐡃𐡓𐡇𐡕𐡀 (drḥtʾ, tree), Old Armenian դրախտ (draxt, garden; paradise).
