Inherited from Middle Persian 𐫅𐫏𐫖 (dym /dēm/), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰáHiman, from Proto-Indo-European dʰeyh₂-men, from the root *dʰeyh₂- (“think, perceive, reflect”).
Compare Parthian 𐫅𐫏𐫖 (dym /dēm/), Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬉𐬨𐬀𐬥 (daēman, “eye; sight, vision”), and Old Armenian դէմ (dēm), an Iranian borrowing.
