Etymology edit

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀭𑀺𑀲𑀯 (sarisava), from Sanskrit सर्षप (sarṣapa). Doublet of سَرْشَپ (sarśap). Cognate with Assamese সবিয়হ (xobih), Bengali সরিষা (śoriśa), Gujarati સરસવ (sarsav), Marathi शिरीस (śirīs), and Punjabi سرھوں / Punjabi ਸਰ੍ਹੋਂ (sarhõ).
