Inherited from Proto-Iranian [Term?], cognate to Ossetian синдзӕ (sinʒæ, thorn) and Khotanese śīṃja (thorny jujube). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *spey- (thorn-like), related to اسپناج (espanâj, spinach).
