Etymology edit

From Aramaic פּלג (plag, phalanx, military unit; attendant or bodyguard especially of the Persian king), from Ancient Greek φᾰ́λᾰγξ (phálanx) – in which case a doublet of فَلَقَة (falaqa) – or from Aramaic פּלוגּה (pluggā, group, division), derived from Proto-Semitic *palag- (to split, to divide, to cleave, to partition); see פלג and φῠ́λᾰξ (phúlax).
