editClipping of قِلَحْلَاح (qilaḥlāḥ), from Classical Syriac ܩܠܚܠܚܐ (qᵊlaḥlāḥā, “giant fennel; any giant stem”) which is also found as كَلْخ (kalḵ, “fennel”), by observation of the stems of the plant. The same kind of clipping is found in لَبْلَاب (lablāb).
