Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (nwklwc /⁠nōg-rōz⁠/, “New Year's day”) (Pazend 𐬥𐬋𐬭𐬋𐬰 (nōrōz)), from 𐭭𐭥𐭪𐭩 (nwky /⁠nōg⁠/, “new”) +‎ 𐭩𐭥𐭬 (YWM /⁠rōz⁠/, “day”). By surface analysis, نو (now, “new”) +‎ روز (ruz, “day”).
