هَاوِيَة (hāwiyaf (plural هَاوِيَات (hāwiyāt))

  1. female equivalent of هَاوٍ (hāwin, amateur, hobbyist)
  2. abyss, bottomless pit
  3. (Islam) one of the names of Hell in Islam
    Synonyms: سَعِير (saʕīr), لَظَىٰ (laẓā), النَّار (an-nār), جَهَنَّم (jahannam), جَحِيم (jaḥīm), حُطَمَة (ḥuṭama), سَقَر (saqar)
    • The Quran, Al-Qāri'ah 101:8-11
      وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ ، فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ ، وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ ،نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ
      waʔammā man ḵaffat mawāzīnuhu , faʔummuhu hāwiyatun , wamā ʔadrāka mā hiyah ,nārun ḥāmiyatun
      But as for one whose scales are light, his refuge will be an abyss. And what can make you know what that is? It is a Fire, intensely hot.
