From Proto-Pathan *pəδā́r < *pəδár, from an ancestral Middle Iranian form *pidár,[1] from Proto-Iranian *pHtā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pHtā́, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr. Cognate with Pashto پلار (plār).
