From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ptmʾn' /⁠paymān⁠/, measure, period; moderation; treaty), ultimately from *pati- and *maH- (to measure). Related to the verb پیمودن (peymudan, to measure). Compare the Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian պայման (payman), Old Georgian პაემანი (ṗaemani), Arabic فَيْمَان (faymān).
