From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ptwstn' /⁠paywastan⁠/), [Book Pahlavi needed] (ptwnd- /⁠paywand-⁠/, to join, to connect), from Proto-Iranian *pati- + *bándati (to bind); see بستن (bastan) for the latter element.
