Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (čʾšt' /čāšt/, “lunch, meal”). Akin to Old Armenian ճաշ (čaš), an Iranian borrowing.

- c. 1060, Nāṣir-i Khusraw, Safarnāma [Book of Travels][1]:
- به راه آبخوری و چاشت خوران به سمنان آمدم و آنجا مدتی مقام کردم و طلب اهل علم کردم.
- ba rāh ābxwarē u čāšt xwarān ba simnān āmadam u ānjā muddatē maqām kardam u talab-i ahl-i ilm kardam.
- Drinking and having a morning meal while on the road, I came to Simnān. I stayed there for a while, and looked for a man of knowledge.
