Likely a borrowed “culture word”, also found in Ugaritic 𐎀𐎄𐎗 (ảdr) and Old Assyrian 𒀜𒊒 (AD.RU /adru/) against Old Babylonian 𒈦𒃷 (maškanum) and 𒈠𒀝𒊏𒈾𒋾 (MA.AG.RA.NA.TI /magrattu/), which two only seem native Semitic coinage (equivalent to Arabic مَسْكَن (maskan) and جُرْن (jurn)).

From Akkadian 𒄑𒄟 (GEŠILDAG2 /adāru, atāru, aṭāru/, “an indigenous tree, probably Populus euphratica”); compare Hebrew אֶדֶר (ʾéḏer, “a variety of tree”), Ugaritic 𐎀𐎄𐎗 (ảdr, “a variety of tree”), Sumerian [script needed] (adar, “a variety of tree or type of wood”). Note also Old Armenian անտառ (antaṙ, “forest”).
