Etymology

Literally, “Hands shaking; swaying (moving from side to side)”, because a person who is emptyhanded will have both hands swaying.

ܐ̈ܝܼܕ݂ܵܬ݂ܵܐ ܒܸܫܓ݂ܵܫܵܐ • (īḏāṯā bišḡāšā)

1. Equivalent to the English expression empty-handed

   ܠܵܐ ܐܵܙܲܠ݇ܚ ܘܐ̈ܝܼܕ݂ܵܬ݂ܲܢ ܒܸܫܓ݂ܵܫܵܐ

   lā āzaḥ wīḏāṯan bišḡāšā

   Let’s not go emptyhanded

   (literally, “Let’s not go with our hands swaying; moving from side to side.”)

Usage notes

• Usually modified into context, eg. ܐ݇ܬ݂ܹܐ ܠܹܗ ܘܐܝܼܕ݂ܵܬ݂ܹܐ ܒܸܫܓ݂ܵܫܵܐ (ṯē lēh wīḏāṯē bišḡāšā, “He came emptyhanded”, literally “He came with his hands swaying.”) or ܠܵܐ ܐܵܙܸܠ݇ܬ ܘܐ̈ܝܼܕ݂ܵܬ݂ܘܿܟ݂ ܒܸܫܓ݂ܵܫܵܐ (lā āzit wīḏāṯōḵ bišḡāšā, “Don’t go emptyhanded”, literally “Don’t go with your hands swaying.”)
