From ܒܹܝܬ (bēt, between) + the plural form of ܢܝܼܣܵܢ (nīsān, April/Nissan), from Akkadian 𒌗𒁈 (itinissani).

Pronunciation edit

  • (standard) IPA(key): [biː‿niːsɑːneː]

Noun edit

ܒܹܝܬ݇ ܢܝܼ̈ܣܵܢܹܐ (bēy nīsānēm

  1. (uncountable) spring (season when plants bloom and dormant animals spring to life)

Usage notes edit

  • In colloquial speech, ܒܹܝܬ݇ ܢܝܼܣܵܢܹ̈ܐ (bēy nīsānē) predominates over ܪܒ݂ܝܼܥܵܐ (rḇīˁā) which is used mostly in formal settings, (as in e.g. * ܫܲܘܝܘܼܬܵܐ ܪܒ݂ܝܼܥܵܝܬܵܐ (šawyūtā rḇīˁāytā, vernal equinox)) or poetic contexts. Some dialects may also use the Persian loan ܒܲܗܵܪ (bahār).
