Etymology edit

Root
ܚ ܘ ܦ (ḥ w p)
1 term

From the older form ܚܵܦܸܦ* (ḥāpip*). This verb in the second and third meanings has developed a gendered-based usage with the verb ܣܵܚܹܐ (sāḥē), used only for males. This is because the original meaning of this verb mainly meant “to wash hair,” which is done by women more often than men, and ultimately the two developed into gender-based usages. This verb may still be used for males in the second and third meanings, but it is less common. In the transitive senses, there is no gender marking.
