From the earlier unassimilated form ܚܕܬܐ (ḥeḏtāʾ), itself probably from the form ܐܚܕܬܐ (ʾəḥeḏtāʾ), from the root ܐ-ܚ-ܕ (ʾ-ḥ-d) related to holding or containing.
