Etymology edit
From Aramaic שְׁמַיָּא (šəmayyā), from Proto-Semitic *šamāy-; compare Hebrew שָׁמַיִם (shamáyim), Arabic سَمَاء (samāʔ) and Akkadian 𒀭 (šamû). Being a religious word, possibly borrowed from or influenced by Classical Syriac, with the native form preserved in the dialectal pronunciation /ʃɪmmeː/.
