तर्कु

SanskritEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Indo-European *terkʷ- (to turn), whence also Sanskrit तर्क (tarka, twisted grass?), निष्टर्क्य (niṣ-ṭarkyá, what can be unscrewed) and probably verbal root तर्कयति (tarkayati, to conjecture, guesse, speculates about). Cognates include Latin torqueō, Hittite 𒋻𒆪𒉿𒀭𒍣 (tarkuwanzi), and Old Church Slavonic тракъ (trakŭ). Per Lubotsky, Ancient Greek ἄτρακτος (átraktos) cannot related because of -κ- (-k-) and the initial (a).
