तर्कु

SanskritEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Indo-European *terkʷ- (to turn), whence also Sanskrit तर्क (tarka, twisted grass?), निष्टर्क्य (niṣ-ṭarkyá, what can be unscrewed) and probably verbal root √tark (to conjecture, guesse, speculates about). Cognates include Latin torqueō, Hittite 𒋻𒆪𒉿𒀭𒍣 (tarkuwanzi), and Old Church Slavonic тракъ (trakŭ). Per Lubotsky, Ancient Greek ἄτρακτος (atraktos) cannot related because of -κ- (-k-) and the initial (a).
