From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dwaHištʰám, from Proto-Indo-European *dwéh₂-isth₂-os, from *dweh₂- (far, long). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬠𐬋𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬆𐬨 (dbōištəm), Old Persian 𐎯𐎢𐎺𐎡𐏁𐎫𐎶 (du-u-v-i-š-t-m /⁠duvaištam⁠/).

      daviṣṭhámasya satpate kṛdhī́ sugám.
      Agni, drive thou the wicked foe, the evil-hearted thief away,
      Drive him very far away, O Lord of the brave and give us easy paths.
