Borrowed from Sanskrit द्रविड (draviḍa), hypercorrected from a Prakrit दमिळ (damiḷa), दमेळ (dameḷa), etc. mostly likely from Old Tamil 𑀢𑀫𑀺𑀵𑁆 (tamiḻ) or another Dravidian language.
