Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀡𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀡 (ṇatthaṇa, “boring the nose”), a verbal derivative of 𑀡𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀸 (ṇatthā, “nose string”), from Sanskrit नस्ता (nastā, “hole bored in septum of nose”), from नस्त (nasta, “nose”), from नस् (nas, “nose”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nHás, from Proto-Indo-European *nh₂és (“nose”).
