Etymology edit
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *párdatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *párdatay, from Proto-Indo-European *pérdetor, from *perd- (“to fart”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πέρδομαι (pérdomai), Lithuanian pérsti, Old English feortan (whence fart).
