Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀁𑀟𑀸𑀭 (piṃḍāra, “cowherd”), from Sanskrit पिण्डार (piṇḍāra, “beggar, buffalo-herd, cowherd”). Compare Old Hindi पिरारा (pirārā), Marathi पेंढार (peṇḍhār).
