Borrowed from Classical Persian پیشوا (pēšvā), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (pyšʾwpʾd /pēšōbāy/, “leader, vanguard”). Compare Punjabi ਪੇਸ਼ਵਾ (peśvā) / پیشوا (peśoā), Gujarati પેશવા (peśvā), Bengali পেশওয়া (peśōẇa), Telugu పీష్వా (pīṣvā), Kannada ಪೇಷ್ವೆ (pēṣve), Tamil பேஷ்வா (pēṣvā), Malayalam പേഷ്വ (pēṣva).
