Alternative forms edit

Etymology 1 edit

Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w- (little; young; offspring) (compare पुत्र (putra)) and cognate with Lithuanian putýtis (young animal, (young) bird). However, variety of forms (with retroflexion and aspiration) indicate a non-Aryan substrate borrowing instead.
