Etymology edit

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘪𑘜𑘹 (māvaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀯𑀺𑀅 (māvia), from Sanskrit मापयति (māpayati), from मा (, to measure). Related to माणे (māṇe). Cognate with Gujarati મવડાવવું (mavḍāvvũ), Sindhi مَائِڻُ / माइणु (māiṇu), مَانئِجَڻُ / मांइजणु (mã̄ijaṇu), Sinhalese මවනවා (mawanawā).
