Inherited from Old Marathi मेजणे (mej̈aṇe), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑁂𑀚𑁆𑀚 (mejja), from Sanskrit मा (, to measure), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁- (to measure). Related to मोज (moj̈, measured quantity, measurement). Compare Konkani मेज्चे (mezce).
