Inherited from Old Marathi मेजणे (mej̈aṇe), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑁂𑀚𑁆𑀚 (mejja), from Sanskrit मा (mā, “to measure”), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁- (“to measure”). Related to मोज (moj̈, “measured quantity, measurement”). Compare Konkani मेज्चे (mezce).
