Etymology edit
Borrowed from Classical Persian یونان (yūnān), from Old Persian 𐎹𐎢𐎴 (y-u-n /yauna/, “Ionia”), from Ancient Greek Ἰωνία (Iōnía, “Ionia”). Likely influenced by the doublet यवन (yavan, “a Greek”) borrowed from Sanskrit, and Arabic اَلْيُونَان (al-yūnān). Compare Bengali ইউনান (iunan).
