Etymology edit

The origin is uncertain.

Traditionally taken to be from Proto-Indo-European *wrek-, and compared with Ancient Greek ῥάκος (rhákos, “rag, wrinkle”), Latvian rakt (“to dig”).^[1] Similarities to Czech vráska (“wrinkle”) have also been noted. Perhaps related to Avestan 𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬙𐬗𐬀𐬉𐬨 (uruuatcaēm, “I will tear it apart”). These proposals have their share of phonetic and/or semantic difficulties. Cross-contamination and conflation with similar roots may have obscured the true origins of the root.^[2]^[3]

Not related to Sanskrit वृक्ष (vṛkṣa, “tree”).
