Etymology edit

Syncopal and umlauted form of earlier আঁইড়া (ãiṛa), itself metathesised from earlier আঁড়িয়া (ãṛiẏa, literally testicle-having), from আঁড় (ãṛ, testicle) +‎ -ইয়া (-iẏa). The "obstinate" sense came from the apparent stubbornness of a bull (compare English bull-headed).
