Inherited from Prakrit 𑀡𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺𑀅 (ṇattia), from Sanskrit नप्तृ (naptṛ) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from नप्ता (naptā) + -तृ (-tṛ) (from Proto-Indo-European *-tḗr), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *náptā, from Proto-Indo-European *népōts. Cognate with Hindi नाती (nātī), and distantly, English nephew, Latin nepōs.
