ফেলা
Bengali edit
Etymology edit
According to Ralph Turner, due to the presence of the unique aspiration, this word is combined from two roots, which were conflated in late Middle Bengali:
- Early Middle Bengali পেলা (pela), from Prakrit 𑀧𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀇 (pĕllaï, “throws”), from Sanskrit प्रेलयति (prelayati), a liquid-variant of प्रेरयति (prerayati, “sets in motion”), from प्र- (pra-) + ईरयति (īrayati, “to cause to move”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hiráyati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ir-éye-ti. Cognate with Sylheti ꠚꠣꠟꠣꠘꠤ (fálani), Assamese
- Early Middle Bengali ফেলা (phela), from Prakrit 𑀨𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮 (phaïlla), metathesized from 𑀧𑀳𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮 (pahilla, “to spread”), from 𑀧𑀳𑀺𑀅 (pahia) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-lla-), from Sanskrit प्रथित (prathita, “spread out”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pratHitás, from Proto-Indo-European *pleth₂-i-tós (“flattened”). Cognate with Hindi फैलना (phailnā).
