According to Ralph Turner, due to the presence of the unique aspiration, this word is combined from two roots, which were conflated in late Middle Bengali:

  1. (transitive) to drop, to let fall
    এখান থেকে ডিমটা ফেললে ফেটে যাবে।
    ekhan theke ḍimṭa phelle pheṭe jabe.
    If you drop the egg from here, it'll explode.
  2. (transitive) to throw away, to dispose of
    এবার ভাতটা ফেলতে হবে।
    ebar bhatṭa phelte hobe.
    We have to throw away the rice now.
